Hookah head types compared
"Hookah head" used to mean one thing: the bowl you pack with shisha and cover with coals. It now covers six different products, from a clay bowl to a battery-powered e-liquid head that replaces the bowl entirely. This guide explains the term and lines every type up side by side.
A hookah head is the part on top of the hookah stem where the flavor is heated: traditionally a bowl filled with shisha tobacco and heated by charcoal. "Head" and "bowl" mean the same thing in lounge talk. Since the mid-2010s the word has also been used for electronic replacements for that bowl: electric heads that heat real shisha without charcoal, and e-hookah heads that hold flavored e-liquid and a battery instead of tobacco. An e-hookah head sits in the same spot on the stem, so the smoke-like vapor still runs through the hookah's water and hose, and most can also be used on their own as a hand-held device.
The difference that matters is what gets heated. Clay bowls, heat management devices and electric heads all heat real shisha molasses. E-hookah heads vaporize e-liquid, which is a different product with its own nicotine labeling; the 52-device market survey behind this site has 14 e-hookah heads in it, including the Olit Hookalit Mega 200K we stock.
Every type of hookah head, side by side
| Head type | What you load | Heat source | Needs charcoal | Works without a hookah | Examples |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Traditional bowl (clay, ceramic, silicone; Egyptian, phunnel, vortex) | Loose shisha molasses | Charcoal on foil or a screen | Yes | No | Sold by most hookah makers |
| Bowl + heat management device | Loose shisha molasses | Charcoal held in a metal cap over the bowl | Yes | No | Kaloud Lotus and similar caps |
| Electric hookah head (heat-not-burn) | Loose shisha, or branded pods/capsules | Electric heater | No | No | OOKA OOKA / OOKA Pro, Ensō Ensō (2026 edition), XKAH Pro, ZYLIT (LITVAAZ) E-HMD |
| Disposable e-hookah head | Pre-filled flavored e-liquid (sealed) | Battery and mesh coil | No | Yes, most models | Olit Hookalit Mega 200K (stocked here); Kori Hookah Head 100K, Kori Hookah Head 120K, Heybar Crystal 25K E-Hookah Head, Heybar Gold 50K, JNR Mega Shisha 100K, Olit Hookalit Mega 150K, Al Fakher Crown Bar Cloud Force Max 50K, Kori Hola E-Hookah Head 40K, Phantom E-Hookah Head 30K, Smookah E-Hookah Head 100K (2-in-1), Elfworld Big-B 99999 |
| Refillable e-hookah head | Any bottled e-liquid you fill yourself | Battery and coil | No | Sometimes | Aspire Proteus Neo, Square E-Head |
| Hookah pen / sealed e-hookah (no head at all) | Pre-filled e-liquid | Battery and coil | No | Yes, that is the point | Olit Hookalit 40K, Geek Bar Burj 80K |
The last row is here because many people searching "e hookah head" actually want a hookah pen: a hand-held device with no stem, water or hose. If that is you, the best e-hookah ranking covers the pens.
The traditional hookah head: bowl, foil and coals
A traditional head is a bowl, usually clay or ceramic, sometimes silicone or glass. You pack it with shisha (a molasses-and-glycerin tobacco, or a herbal substitute), cover it with foil or a screen, and put lit charcoal on top. The main shapes differ in how the juice drains: an Egyptian bowl has holes in the floor, so syrup can drip into the stem; a phunnel bowl has one raised central spire that keeps the juice in the bowl; a vortex bowl has a raised spire with holes in its side. This kind of head is what "hookah head" means in a lounge, and in the many searches for "hookah head meaning".
Charcoal is the hardest part of a traditional session, and it is also where most of the smoke chemistry comes from: a machine study found charcoal accounts for about 90% of the carbon monoxide in hookah smoke (Monzer et al., Food and Chemical Toxicology, 2008). The CDC lists charcoal as a source of carbon monoxide, metals and carcinogens (CDC). That is the context for every type below, which all exist to replace or contain the coals.
Heat management devices: still charcoal, less fuss
A heat management device (HMD) is a metal cap that sits on the bowl in place of foil. Coals go inside the cap, which spreads the heat and shields them from wind and ash. It is still a charcoal session, just a tidier one. The Kaloud Lotus is the best-known example; many hookah makers sell their own. An HMD is the usual step before going fully electric.
Electric hookah heads: real shisha, no charcoal
Electric heads keep the shisha and replace the coal with a heating element, so the session tastes like tobacco-based hookah rather than a vape. They split into two kinds.
- Electronic HMDs that sit on a normal bowl. The ZYLIT E-HMD from LITVAAZ is built this way: according to its maker, it heats from the top and around the whole bowl at once, with a touchscreen for temperature and session time, and it removes the need to light, rotate and replace charcoal. The maker does not publish battery capacity or price on its page.
- Electric bowls and pod systems. The XKAH Pro is a cordless electric bowl rated about two hours per charge, with a tobacco-free mode; the Ensō heats loose shisha or capsules on a 5,000 mAh battery for about 1.5 hours; the OOKA heats branded molasses pods and runs from the mains.
All of them need a hookah, water and a hose, and nicotine depends entirely on the shisha you pack. How much nicotine a bowl of shisha delivers is in how much nicotine is in hookah.
E-hookah heads: every model on the US market
An e-hookah head looks like an oversized bowl but holds a tank of flavored e-liquid, a battery and a coil. You fit it to the stem where the bowl would go, or draw from it directly. Disposable heads come pre-filled and are thrown away when empty; refillable heads take any bottled e-liquid. Here is every e-hookah head in our survey, with numbers from the maker's page or a named US retailer listing, as of October 2026.

Three things stand out. First, nearly every disposable head is sold as "2-in-1": it can go on a hookah or be used alone, and the battery is large (often 1,700 to 2,200 mAh) because a head is expected to run long table sessions. Second, nicotine varies more than the shapes suggest, from 0.35% on the Olit heads to 5% on several others, so check the label rather than the format. Third, only 2 heads in the survey are refillable (Aspire Proteus Neo, Square E-Head); we do not currently stock a refillable one.
